I've been running this site for a while now, and I have looked at thousands of AI-generated images. Good ones, terrible ones, and everything in between. And I have noticed something: the difference between an AI image that fools everyone and one that screams "I typed this into Midjourney during my lunch break" usually comes down to five specific mistakes.
If your AI art still looks off and you can't figure out why, I guarantee you're making at least two of these.
1. The Skin is Too Smooth and It Makes Everyone Look Like a Mannequin
This is the most common giveaway and it's the first thing trained eyes notice. Every AI model has a tendency to over-smooth skin by default. It removes pores, softens texture, eliminates every freckle and imperfection. The result is a face that looks like it was carved out of silicone. Real skin has texture. It has tiny imperfections, uneven tone, slight redness around the nose, barely visible hair on arms. If your image looks like someone ran a beauty filter at maximum strength, it's going to read as artificial immediately.
The fix: Add negative prompts that specifically fight the smoothing. Terms like "textured skin," "skin pores," "natural skin" in your positive prompt, and "airbrushed," "smooth skin," "plastic" in your negatives. In Flux and Z-Image Turbo, try adding "raw photo" or "candid" to your prompt to push the model toward more natural rendering. Some creators also add a very light noise layer in post-processing to break up the uncanny smoothness.
2. Hands Still Look Wrong (But Not in the Way You Think)
Everyone jokes about AI hands. Six fingers, melted knuckles, impossible anatomy. And yeah, that still happens. But the hand problem in 2026 is actually more subtle than that. Most newer models can generate five fingers just fine now. The real issue is that the hands look too perfect. They're symmetrical in a way real hands never are. The fingernails are all exactly the same length. There are no veins, no knuckle wrinkles, no asymmetry between left and right.
The fix: Give the hands something to do. Holding a coffee mug, resting on a desk, adjusting a necklace. When hands interact with objects, models are forced to render them in specific positions, which naturally introduces the kind of asymmetry and detail that makes them look real. If the image doesn't need hands, crop or compose your shot so they aren't prominent. There's no shame in working around a weakness.
3. The Lighting Makes No Physical Sense
This one is subtle but devastating. Bad AI images have light coming from everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Shadows point in different directions. There's a highlight on the left cheek but the key light seems to be coming from the right. The background is lit like it's noon but the subject looks like they're sitting under a desk lamp at midnight.
Real photographers obsess over lighting because it's the single biggest factor in whether a photo looks professional or amateur. The same applies to AI art, except most people never think about it because they're focused on the subject and not the scene.
The fix: Specify your light source directly in the prompt. "Soft window light from the left," "golden hour backlighting," "overhead fluorescent office lighting." Be specific about where the light is coming from and what kind of light it is. Single-source lighting prompts produce dramatically more realistic results than letting the model guess. If you want to go further, reference actual photography lighting setups: "Rembrandt lighting," "butterfly lighting," "split lighting." These are terms the models understand because they were trained on millions of photos that used them.
4. The Background is an Afterthought (Or Does Not Exist)
I see this constantly. Someone generates a stunning face with incredible detail, and behind them is either a blurry void that looks like someone smeared Vaseline on the lens, or a background so generic it could be a stock photo wallpaper. Real photos have environments. Real rooms have clutter. Real streets have trash cans and parked cars and fire hydrants. The background tells you where someone is and makes the whole image feel grounded in reality.
The fix: Treat the background as its own character. Instead of "woman in kitchen," try "woman leaning against kitchen island, morning light through blinds, coffee maker on counter, mail scattered next to keys, potted basil plant on windowsill." Specific environmental details force the model to build a real space around your subject. The more specific and mundane the details, the more convincing the scene becomes. Nobody looks at a kitchen with bills on the counter and thinks "that's clearly AI."
5. Every Single Image Has the Same Composition
Center-framed, eye-level, shoulders-up portrait. That's the default for every AI model and about 80% of AI creators never break out of it. Scroll through any AI art gallery and you'll see the same shot repeated hundreds of times. Different faces, same framing. It screams "generated" because real photographers use wildly different compositions, even when shooting the same subject.
The fix: Study actual photography and steal their compositions. Low angle looking up. Shot from behind, looking over the shoulder. Extreme close-up on just the eyes. Wide shot showing the full environment with the subject small in the frame. Dutch angle. Overhead shot. Reflections in mirrors or windows. Give your prompts camera direction: "shot from below," "bird's eye view," "over-the-shoulder angle," "through a rain-streaked window." Breaking the center-portrait mold is the single fastest way to make your AI art look less like AI art.
The Real Secret Nobody Talks About
Here's the thing. The gap between amateur AI art and convincing AI art isn't about which model you use or how expensive your GPU is. It's about understanding what makes a real photograph look real. The lighting, the imperfections, the composition, the environmental storytelling. Every one of these fixes comes down to the same principle: study real photography, then teach the AI to replicate what makes it work.
The best AI artists I know aren't prompt engineers. They're photographers who happen to use a text box instead of a camera. Start thinking like that, and your images will improve overnight.
